Dive in and learn with Vikes Aquatics

Vikes Aquatics offers a variety of drop-in opportunities, fitness programs, swimming lessons and certification courses for children to adults. Our pools include both an indoor facility located in the McKinnon Building and an outdoor pool located at the Stewart Complex (ISC). Our programs cater to the general public as well as university students, alumni, faculty and staff.

Adult Lessons


Adult Beginner
It’s never too late to learn to swim! Start at the beginning with submersion, breath control, floats and glides. This class will work at your own pace. Registration details

Adult Intermediate
Develop the basics of front crawl and back crawl - including breathing techniques for front crawl. Gain comfort with deep water skills like diving. Registration details

Adult Advanced
Learn how to become more efficient in the water. Work on front crawl, back crawl and breast stroke. You will be introduced to elementary back stroke, side stroke and butterfly. An endurance swim of 300m is practiced. Pre-requisite: Must be able to swim 25m of continuous front crawl. Registration details

Masters
Swim hard, swim fast, swim Masters. Refine strokes as well as increase endurance and speed through swim workouts designed for varied levels. Based on your ability choose the level that challenges you. Must be able to swim 500 m continuously to join. Registration details

Summer Swim Challenge
Participation in the Swim Challenge is FREE. Swimmers will log their distances in the pool to be eligible for prizes and to successfully complete the challenge. Registration bar code is 29351.

Childrens Lessons

Red Cross Swim Kids Program

10 level program that helps your child develop a healthy lifestyle through swimming. Your child will learn to swim and stay safe in a fun enviroment that promotes a personal best and celebrates individual sucess. The 10 levels allow for solid progression. Children learn competitive and survival strokes and build their distance and speed while focusing on making safe decisions in or around the water. In each level, participants are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to the next level once all criteria have been successfully completed.

Bring all your swimmers at the same time for lessons at the Ian Stewart Complex Outdoor Pool. Swim kids level 1-10 are at the same time. We accept children age 4 and up into our Swim Kids Program. New swimmers start at Level 1, continuing swimmers register for the level recommended by their last swim instructor. Swimmers will be divided into groups based on previous experience and swimming ability on the first day. To assist instructors with evaluation, bring your past progress card to the current instructor on the first day of lessons.

Level 1
Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim. Registration Details

Level 2
Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Floatation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim. Registration Details

Level 3
This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building a strength in the flutter kick and a 15 meter swim. Registration Details

Level 4
This level introduces the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim. Registration Details

Level 5
This level introduces the back crawl (15M), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim. Registration Details

Level 6

This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m) and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1 1/2 minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim. Registration Details

Level 7

This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m), elementary back stroke (25m), introduction of whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to 150m swim. Registration Details

Level 8
This level is an introduction to breast stroke(15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into the water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each. Registration Details

Level 9
This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and side stroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim. Registration Details

Lightning Fast Swim Series

The Lightning Fast Swim Series has 5 levels and is based on a Swimming First Philosophy which introduces the techniques of competitive swimming right from the earliest levels to develop improved levels of swimming efficiency and skills. It is designed primarily for 3 to 10 year olds who want to learn to swim with confidence, gain endurance and improve stroke technique. The series is designed by award winning Pacific Coast Swimming coaches and is an innovative skills-based swimming program designed to be mastered quickly by young children.

Level 1
Designed for children comfortable in shallow water without a parent. Lightning Fast 1 aimes at having the child learn all of the basic swimming movements including body position in the water leading to stroke development, kicking propulsion, submersion, exhalation under water and safe comfortable movement in shallow water progressing to deep water. Guaranteed small class size of no more than 5 swimmers per instructor. Ages 3-6. Registration Details

Level 2
Designed for children with good listening skills and who are comfortable in deep water. All of the skills of treading water, basic dive entry, swimming 10m on front and back will be performed in shallow water. This level prepares children for the pre-competitive levels and will quickly build confidence and their endurance in the water. It is designed to prepare the child for the Lightning Fast 3 or entry into Red Cross Swim Kids Level 4. Gauranteed small class size of no more than 5 swimmers per instructor. Ages 4-6. Level 3
This level of the Lightning Fast Swim Series introduces the skills of three of the competitive strokes as well as the beginnings of turns and dives. Swimmers will become proficient kickers and understand the feelings of efficient movement through the water. Guaranteed small class size of no more than 7 swimmers per instructor. Prerequisite: Lightning Fast 2 or Swim Kids 4. Registration Details

Level 4
Level 4 will see the swimmer improve their skills in all of the competitive strokes including breaststroke. Children will enjoy their increased kicking ability, learn many new stroke drills as well as develop an improved endurance and skill level in swimming and turning. Guaranteed small class size of no more than 7 swimmers per instructor. Prerequisite: Lightning Fast 3 or Swim Kids 4. Registration Details

Level 5
Lightning Fast 5 introduces in-house competitions. Coaches will aim to have the swimmers complete an induvidual medley of distance using all four strokes. The children will have fun learniung to use the pace clock and challenge themselves at their level in four strokes, turns, starts and relays. The one-hour lesson per week will introduce some dryland skills as well. Upon completion of Level 5 swimmers will be comfortable swimming several hundred meters in a session. Certifications

CPR C
Would you know what to do if someone was choking? Learn the skills needed to recognize and resopnd to choking and cardivascular emergencies for adults, children and babies. Includes the use of automated external difibrillator (AED). Suitable for those looking for training for the workplace or for their own interest. Registration Details

CPR C Recert
Reivew and renewal of teh CPR-C certificate. Bring proof of current CPR-C. Certificates are current for three years from date of previous course. Registration Details

Emergency First Aid
Basic course offering an overview of first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for the workplace or home. Course covers skills needed to recognize, prevent and respond to circulation emergencies for adults, children and babies. Other topics include airway and breathing emergencies, as well as the prevention of disease transmission. Registration Details

Standard First Aid
Comprehensive course offering first aid and CPR skills for those who need training for work or would like for their own interest. Course covers a variety of topics from basic (circulation and breathing emergencies and prevention of disease transmission) to in-depth (sudden medical emergencies and injuries to muscles/tissues and bones. Standard First Aid Recert
Standard First Aid needs to be recertified every 2 years to remain current. Spend the day reviewing and practicing skills. This recertification includes CPR C. Bring your wallet card to the certification as proof of pre-requisite. Registration Details

Bronze Medallion
Second lifesaving level in the Lifesaving Society Bronze program. Focus will be on developing the four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness in a fun learning environment. Prerequisite: Bronze Star or appropriate swimming ability and are turning 13 years of age by last day of course.

Bronze Cross
Final lifesaving level in the Lifesaving Society Bronze program. Judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness will be expanded in a fun learning environment. Prerequisite: The successful completion of Bronze Medallion. Registration Details

National Lifegaurd Service (NLS) Recert
A combined precert/recert clinic providing NLS candidates an opportunity to review NLS skills and knowledge as well as learn new information on lifeguarding. Prerequisite: any NLS option issued withing 7 years and CPR-C issued within 1 year. Bring proof of certifications. Registration Details

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Recert

This workshop is designed to ensure the quality and standards of the Red Cross program are maintained. It's an opportunity for instructors to share ideas, review skills and address areas of challenge. Certifications may not be expired for more than three years. Advanced Open Water Course
The advanced open water course is designed for certified divers to broaden their understanding of various types of diving beyond the basics. Divers have the opportunity to complete several types of diving; deep, drift, drysuit, underwater navigation, wreck search and recovery, buoyancy, night, photography and many more. The course offers a lifetime of certification through the Professional Association of Diving (PADI), which is recognized around the globe. Registration Details

Open Water Dive Course
The open water diver course is a beginner certification designed for non-certified divers to earn the credentials to dive to 60 feet/20 meters anywhere in the world. The course offers a lifetime certification through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) which is recognized around the globe. Registration Details

The course involves the following components:

  • 5 Knowledge development sessions to enhance your understanding of safe diving practices
  • 5 confined water pool sessions to offer a safe area to practice diving and build dive skill confidence
  • 4 Open water Dives at local sites where you explore local Victoria waters and demonstrate your new dive skills and knowledge

    Rescue Diver Course
    The Rescue Diver course is a certification course designed to prepare divers for emergencies. The course offers a lifetime certification through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), which is recognized around the globe. Registration Details

    The course involves the following components:
  • 5 knowledge development sessions to enhance your understanding of dive emergencies

  • Execution of 10 dive emergency skills. Skills conducted at McKinnon pool to offer a confined enviroment to practice and master prior to open water demonstration.

2 open water scenarios for divers to demonstrate skills in simulated emergencies.

Discover Scuba Diving
Experience diving for the first time! The single pool session gives participants the chance to try diving in a quick and safe enviroment. In this 1hr course you will wear full scuba gear in the shallow end of the swimming pool and discover what it feels like to breath underwater. The session includes a brief overview of the scuba equipment and how it is used. You will learn a few basic scuba diving skills and have a chance to explore the underwater world. All equipment provided. Groups can be accommodated on demand. Registration Details

Scuba Review
The scuba review gives certified divers the opportunity to refresh their dive skills prior to jumping back into the open water. Registration Details

Drysuit Orientation

Many certified divers trained in warm climates may find the cool BC waters uncomfortable. The drysuit orientation is not a certification course, but does provide the experience necessary to rent and use a drysuit. Registration Details

All groups are welcome! University, community, schools, teams, day cares and birthday parties. Set a time to join our Everyone Welcome Swim or book space at the indoor and outdoor pool.

You can also book instruction. Book a set of Red Cross Swim Lessons or a session on how to survive a fall into water (the Lifesaving Society's Swim to Survive Standard - roll, tread and swim). We also offer one time or multiple sessions of games, Aquafit, water running water polo, sychronized swimming and discover scuba.
